Cavs vs. Pistons 2026 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals Game 5 prediction, odds, pick
The Cleveland Cavaliers have turned their series with the Detroit Pistons around. After dropping the first two games of the series in Detroit, the Cavs made a stand at home and won both games in Cleveland to square the series.
The Pistons return home with a chance to hold serve, but after getting hit with a 22-0 run at the start of the second half in Game 4, it may not be so easy for Cade Cunningham and his teammates. Donovan Mitchell was the key in Cleveland’s 112-103 triumph as scored 21 points in the third quarter to key the run and he finished the game with 43 points.
Mitchell had to know that the Cavs were in trouble after going to the locker room after trailing 56-52 at halftime. Mitchell got significant help from veteran James Harden, as The Beard contributed 24 points and handed out 11 assists.
The Pistons have already been through quite a lot in the postseason as they trailed the Orlando Magic 3-1 in their first-round series before they made a stirring comeback. Now it’s up to Cunningham, Tobias Harris and the supporting cast to show that they are not going to let the Cavs come in and steal their homecourt advantage away.
The Pistons play with quite a bit more of a physical edge to their game at home and that translates into energy. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has full confidence that returning to their home court will help the Pistons regain control of their tight series.
“The best part about it is it’s now a three-game series, and we got two of them in Detroit,” Bickerstaff said. “So, we got to make sure we go home and take care of our business.”

Keys to Cavaliers vs. Pistons Game 5 Matchup

The Cavaliers have served notice that they are not going to be cannon fodder for the Eastern Conference’s top seed. They joined the series with a pair of home victories, and the 22-0 run they used in Game 4 to take charge indicates that they have more than enough talent and skill to steal a game on the road if the Pistons are not at their best.
The Pistons have the kind of defensive mindset that should allow them to return home and contest every Cleveland offensive thrust. That’s how the Pistons are built and that’s what Bickerstaff and his coaching staff must make happen. However, if the Cavaliers can turn this into a more up-and-down the court type of game that features another offensive explosion, the Pistons are in trouble — home court notwithstanding.
The Cavaliers have more offensive weapons and are better equipped in a high-scoring game. The Pistons want to depend on Cunningham and Harris for the bulk of their scoring and also get a lift from the outside shooting of Duncan Robinson. The rest of their game is based on defense and they will look to Ausar Thompson to set the tone in that area.
The Cavs have a big mountain to climb because they are on the road, but they will have a chance if Mitchell continues the offensive surge he was on in Game 4.
Cavaliers vs. Pistons Prediction and Pick
The Pistons have quite a bit to lose if they don’t assert themselves very quickly. The longer the Cavaliers stay in this game, the more confident they will grow. The 1-2 punch of Mitchell and Harden may be too much for the Pistons if the game is close down the stretch.
The Pistons are a smart team in addition to their skills on the defensive side of the court. They are not going to let the visitors feel comfortable at any point in the game. If Robinson can help Cunningham and Harris by hitting his open shots early in the game, the Pistons will be able to dictate the pace and put the Cavaliers on their heels. The Pistons should use their defensive skills and their opportunistic play to win at home and gain a 3-2 edge in the series.
Final Timberwolves-Spurs Prediction & Pick: Detroit Pistons -3.5 (-112); UNDER 213.5 (-112).
