Canucks sign defenceman to one-year contract extension
The Vancouver Canucks signed defenceman Jack Thompson to a one-year, two-way contract extension for the 2026-27 season, general manager Ryan Johnson announced on Friday.
Thompson was approaching restricted free agency at the end of the current campaign before agreeing to remain with the organization. The 24-year-old was acquired by the Canucks from the San Jose Sharks in March in exchange for defenceman Jett Woo. After the trade, Thompson joined the Abbotsford Canucks and recorded 3 goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 14 games, along with 8 penalty minutes. He also made an immediate impact, producing 2 goals and 3 assists in his first two appearances for Abbotsford.
Before his time in Vancouver, Thompson played for the San Jose Barracuda and the Sharks organization. He appeared in 42 games with the Barracuda, logging 3 goals and 9 assists for 12 points with 12 penalty minutes and a +13 rating.
At the NHL level, Thompson has played 34 career games between San Jose and the Tampa Bay Lightning, amassing 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) with 10 penalty minutes and a -9 rating, while averaging 15:47 of ice time per game. During the 2024-25 season with the Sharks, he finished with 4 goals and 6 assists in 31 NHL games.
In the AHL overall, Thompson has appeared in 217 career games across Syracuse, San Jose, and Abbotsford, accumulating 104 points (23 goals, 81 assists) and 60 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 11 Calder Cup playoff games, accounting for 2 assists and 2 penalty minutes.
Originally selected 93rd overall in the 2020 NHL Draft by Tampa Bay, Thompson spent time with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds before turning professional. He made his NHL debut in 2024 with the Lightning in a single game before being traded to San Jose in the Anthony Duclair deal.
Internationally, Thompson represented Canada at the 2018 World U17 Hockey Challenge and won gold at the 2022 World Junior Championship, where he notched 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 7 games.
The signing completed the Canucks’ second move after also agreeing to a deal with forward Ilya Safonov.
