Canadiens’ Martin St. Louis rues ‘bad luck’ in Game 1 loss to Sabres

The Montreal Canadiens could not take down the Buffalo Sabres in Game 1 of their second-round matchup. Goalie Jakub Dobes only faced 16 shots on goal. However, the Habs netminder allowed four goals. Josh Doan scored two points for the hosting Sabres in a 4-2 win for Buffalo on Wednesday night.

Head coach Martin St. Louis has loads of postseason experience as a player. As a coach, this is his second go-around in the playoffs. He has seen it all, and knows bad luck can be a big factor at this point in the season. He believes his team’s lack of luck early on contributed to the loss on Wednesday.

“The start of the game didn’t help: we started with some bad luck, with Lane tripping on the boards. From there, you’re already chasing the game and finding yourself on the penalty kill, so it’s tough,” the Canadiens head coach said, via Chris Galanopoulos of Rocket Sports.

“However, I liked our fight, especially when Dach scored and we came back. There are a lot of things in that game that I like, even though we got hurt too much during those minutes in the second period.”

Montreal has shown the ability to battle through some tough games. In fact, this is the team’s first result — win or loss — that was decided by more than a single goal. The Canadiens will need to lean on their ability in close games if they want to bounce back.

The Habs and Sabres will return to the ice on Friday night for Game 2 at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
