Canadiens makes Conference Finals history not seen since 1993
After getting blown out at home in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final, the Montreal Canadiens made sure they wouldn’t make the same mistake in Game 7 against the Buffalo Sabres.
While they initially lost the 2-0 lead that they took in the opening 20 minutes of play after the Sabres knotted the score, forward Alex Newhook, who scored the game-winning goal in Game 7 of their opening round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning, beat Buffalo goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with a glove-side shot in overtime, securing the series for the Canadiens.
The Canadiens are back in the third round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2021 and second since 2014, and they’ve made NHL history in the process, which the organization is already tied to. They became the youngest NHL team to advance to a Conference Final series since the Canadiens in 1993, who later went on to defeat the Los Angeles Kings for their most recent Stanley Cup win that season.
NHL Insider Chris Johnston confirmed the incredible statistic on social media:
The Montreal Canadiens are the youngest NHL team to advance to the conference final since the 1993 Habs, per NHLPR,” Johnston wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Both teams with an average age of 25.8.”
The last time that the Canadiens were in the third round of the playoffs, they defeated the Vegas Golden Knights to advance to the Cup Final, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games.
The Canadiens will take on the Carolina Hurricanes, who have swept their way through the first two rounds of the postseason with victories over the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers. Game 1 of the series will take place on Thursday evening.
