Cameron Brink’s game-changing effect earns Lynne Roberts shout-out
The Los Angeles Sparks got back in the win column following their 97-88 victory against the Phoenix Mercury to kick off a four-game road trip. The Sparks had six players in double figures including Cameron Brink who also made a huge impact on the defensive end as well.
Following the game, Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts spoke about how Cameron Brink changed the game on both ends of the floor, making the Mercury acutely aware of her presence on the court.
“I think you’re seeing her play with a level of confidence. You have to be confident and have worked on your game to be able to do that. Cam was great with her aggressiveness. She had three huge blocks, key blocks,” Roberts said during her postgame press conference. “And then it affects everybody. You see people, [Kahleah] Copper drives in and sees Cam and says, ‘whoops, nope,’ and takes it back out.
“It affects everybody even when it’s not a blocked shot. So her aggressiveness and confidence was great.”
Against the Mercury, Brink finished with 12 points, five rebounds, one assists, one steal and three blocked shots in 19 minutes. She shot 3-of-6 from the field, 1-of-2 from the 3-point line and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
The play that Roberts was talking about at the beginning of her quote was a drive that Brink had late in the first quarter. She found herself isolated near the top of the key against Mercury rookie Marta Suarez. After quickly surveying the court, Brink put the ball on the floor and made an aggressive move to the basket, attacking Suarez and finishing the and-one.

It was the first of two hoop and the harm plays Brink had, the other one coming in the second quarter against the Mercury’s bruising All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas. On that play, Kelsey Plum found Brink in the dunker’s spot, and she powered herself through Thomas to finish the play and draw the foul.

After the game though, Brink wasn’t completely satisfied with her performance considering the fact that she coughed up the ball a few times.
“I think my job is just to come in and bring energy. I thought I did that today,” Brink said during the postgame press conference. “I had six turnovers which is really terrible, so I’m going to work on that, watch Gil with the team. But I’m just really loving my role and just bringing energy every time I’m on the floor.
Brink didn’t have the best opening game during the Sparks’ loss to the Las Vegas Aces back on May 10. It led to overreaction throughout social media, and Roberts herself made a point to push back against the misleading narratives that were circulating around Brink’s play.
But after that first game, Brink has looked much more comfortable on the court and in the team’s system. And moving forward, she’s going to continue to be a major piece when it comes to the Sparks’ hopes for success this year.
