Bryson DeChambeau has Masters meltdown on iconic 11th hole

Bryson DeChambeau is not having the start to his Masters Tournament that he had hoped. The long hitter usually looks to take advantage of the par-5s, but DeChambeau bogeyed the par-5 2nd to begin his round. He bounced back with a birdie on 3, before parring the rest of his front nine.

But the major champion will likely rue his decision on the iconic par-4 11th.

After his approach shot found the right greenside bunker, DeChambeau’s attempt at precision proved costly.

The 32-year-old failed to clear the bunker, and was left with a similar shot for par. At that point, the wise play is to just get the ball onto the green and hopefully get up-and-down for a bogey. Worst case, you settle for double. The only thing you cannot do is fail to get out of the sand.

Yet, that’s exactly what DeChambeau did.

After his third attempt finally got out, he missed a lengthy downhill double-bogey putt. The triple on 11 dropped him from inside the top 20 into a tie for 60th, as of this writing.

DeChambeau is a two-time major winner, having captured the U.S. Open in 2020 (Winged Foot) and 2024 (Pinehurst No. 2). He has come painfully close to winning at Augusta National.

Last year, he played alongside eventual champion Rory McIlroy in the final round. McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to earn his place in history. Meanwhile, the Modesto, California native played a very poor stretch of holes in the middle of his round that took him out of it.

The only good piece of news for DeChambeau is that it is still early. If the LIV Golf star can come home shaving a shot or two off his score, he’ll at least give himself a chance at the weekend.
