Browns head coach responds to Deion Sanders after NFL icon requests to speak about son Shedeur
Deion Sanders was left baffled by one thing the Cleveland Browns didn’t do in 2025.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer was curious as to why the Browns didn’t speak to him about his son, Shedeur Sanders, during his rookie season.

Under his father’s leadership with the Colorado Buffaloes, quarterback Shedeur threw for 4,134 yards with 37 touchdowns in his senior year.
Entering the 2025 NFL Draft, many expected him to be selected in the first round, but a dramatic slide saw him picked in the fifth round by Cleveland.
“I want to meet him [Todd Monken] because I think it’s vital as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about how to get him going,” Deion said on The Barbershop.
“That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it.
“Even a guy like Travis Hunter being drafted to Jacksonville, and I’ve had him for the last three [years], don’t you think you would want to talk to me to ask me what gets him going and what backs him off? You would want to know that.”
Despite entering the season third on the depth chart, Shedeur would start the final seven games of the season for the Browns.
His 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions were good enough to earn him a Pro Bowl appearance after player withdrawals.
However, the Browns 5-12 record, (four wins coming with Shedeur starting) resulted in the firing of head coach Kevin Stefanksi on NFL’s ‘Black Monday’.
Cleveland brought in Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who was being pursued by a number of teams with vacancies.
Monken has a reputation as one of the league’s best developers of quarterbacks for over a decade.

Now that there is a fresh voice and mindset in Cleveland, Monken welcomes the opportunity to speak to Deion about Shedeur.
“I can’t wait,” Monken said, via NBC Sports.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for coach Sanders, obviously as a player but also what he’s done as a coach.
“He’s done a great job with Shedeur as a father. I’m open to any time he wants to meet. He said he was going to come but he had a commercial. If he just tells me where the next commercial shoot is, I’ll be there.
“I really am looking forward to it. I’ve got a ton of respect for him and I’ve got a ton of respect for Shedeur because all he’s done since I’ve been here is work.”
Deshaun Watson‘s return from injury has led to a quarterback battle for the job in 2026.

It remains to be seen if his dad’s college insights give him a leg-up in said battle, but Monken welcomes the opportunity to hear all about it.
