Brian Schottenheimer makes admission on George Pickens’ Cowboys future amid trade rumors

The Dallas Cowboys watched trade speculation hover above them regarding George Pickens. Dallas immediately eased tensions with getting the wide receiver to sign his franchise tag. But Pickens’ situation still crossed the mind of head coach Brian Schottenheimer during NFL Draft weekend.

Schottenheimer himself made an admission about the talented WR’s future with the team via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“You guys know how much we love George. We gave (Pittsburgh Steelers) a third-round pick last year and what he did on the field was incredible,” Schottenheimer began.

He added how one relationship is in good standing. All leading to the belief Pickens will stick around in Dallas.

“The relationship (with Pickens and CeeDee Lamb) is awesome. We look forward to George being a huge part of what we’re doing this season and hopefully beyond,” Schottenheimer said.

Pickens’ contract situation hit a significant roadblock before draft weekend. Dallas owner/general manager Jerry Jones plus son Stephen needed to mend one fence: With Pickens’ agent David Mulugheta. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport revealed an “olive branch” became extended out to Pickens and his agent.

“The Cowboys extended an olive branch to agent David Mulugheta of Athletes First, as owner Jerry Jones and COO Stephen Jones called him with both on the phone to discuss franchise tagged WR George Pickens’ future. The call was professional and cordial,” Rapoport posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

Jones and Dallas even handed Pickens assurance they wouldn’t draft a WR right away. The Cowboys rolled to defense for their first three picks. Penn State offensive tackle Drew Shelton was the lone offensive selection in the fourth round before the draft concluded.
