Brian Kelly gets brutally honest on ‘simple’ reason for LSU firing

The LSU Tigers fired Brian Kelly as head coach in October 2025 before the regular season even finished. After replacing him with Lane Kiffin, Kelly shares his honest take about what led to his demise.

When it comes down to it, the 64-year-old head coach claims he was let go by the program because he just wasn’t winning enough games, according to John Brice of USA Today. However, Kelly also listed his achievements while coaching LSU, pondering the definition of winning.

“I would say there’s an easy, simple answer, and I didn’t win enough games,” said Kelly. “There’s a longer answer to why that didn’t happen. I’ll probably have to write a book about that. There’s always cause and effect, and the effect was I didn’t win enough games, period. I guess you do have to start with what is winning enough games?

“We were 34-14, 22-3 at home when I was fired. We had two 10-win seasons, won an SEC (West Division) championship, had the No. 1 offense in college football, [and] a Heisman Trophy winner,” continued Kelly. “When you look at what is winning and what keeps you employed, other people make those decisions. But it starts with what is defined as winning, and unfortunately, it wasn’t defined as enough winning, leading into being fired.”

LSU fired Brian Kelly after eight games in the 2025-26 campaign after the program went 5-3 in that stretch. After starting the season 4-0, the Tigers suffered three losses in a four-game stretch to the Ole Miss Rebels, Vanderbilt Commodores, and Texas A&M Aggies.

By the time the season had ended, the Tigers finished with a 7-6 total record while going 3-5 in SEC games. Four of the five losses came on the road. It was a brutal stretch, and the program seemingly felt it was time to move on from Brian Kelly, even if he did feel like he had found success in the previous years of his tenure.
