Brewers walk off Yankees in OT with clutch William Contreras hit
The Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Saturday night at American Family Field, walking it off in the 10th inning on William Contreras’ sacrifice fly after a back-and-forth contest.
New York struck first when Paul Goldschmidt hit a leadoff home run, later finishing with two RBIs, while Milwaukee’s offense remained quiet early as Yankees starter Cam Schlittler held them scoreless through six innings. Schlittler allowed just two hits and struck out six, lowering his major league-leading ERA to 1.35 despite being struck in the left calf by a 108.5 mph line drive from Contreras in the first inning.
Brewers starter Kyle Harrison also faced early pressure, giving up Goldschmidt’s homer on the first batter of the game and later allowed New York to take a 2-0 lead before being relieved after four innings. Milwaukee’s bullpen used Chad Patrick for three innings, followed by DL Hall and Aaron Ashby, who ultimately earned his league-leading seventh win of the season.
The Brewers began their comeback in the seventh inning when Jake Bauers launched a 420-foot solo home run off Brent Headrick to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the eighth, Brice Turang singled, stole second, and scored on a Contreras RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
Extra innings brought more drama. In the 10th, Ryan McMahon lined a two-out RBI single off Ashby to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Milwaukee responded immediately in the bottom half. Garrett Mitchell, starting as the Manfred Man on second, advanced on a wild pitch before Jackson Chourio tied the game with a one-out infield single off Fernando Cruz.
With the bases loaded after a defensive miscue by Tim Hill, whose throw hit Luis Rengifo and loaded the bases, Contreras lifted a fly ball to right field for the walk-off sacrifice fly, scoring Rengifo and securing the victory.
With the series clinched, the Brewers will look to complete a sweep of New York on Sunday afternoon, while the Yankees have dropped two straight games for the first time since early April.
