Brewers’ Christian Yelich back from injury and already socking dingers

The Milwaukee Brewers are going for a series sweep against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday with Christian Yelich back in the lineup. After suffering a groin injury, the designated hitter missed 24 games. Then, he returned for Tuesday’s matchup with the San Diego Padres, but was held out of the next four games with back soreness. Yelich came back on Sunday and made his presence known.

Yelich was 0-for-2 against starter Bailey Ober before his at-bat in the fifth inning. Then, with the Twins ahead 3-2, he pulled a hanging changeup deep into right field, over the high Target Field fence. It is just Yelich’s second homer of the season, with the first coming on March 29.

Yelich has dealt with more than his fair share of injuries in recent years. The Brewers star played just 73 games in 2024 before undergoing offseason back surgery to fix a long-standing problem. He followed that up by playing 150 games in 2025 for the 97-win Crew. He was able to play in all nine postseason games after missing the 2024 Wild Card Series against the New York Mets.

Injuries have been a story this year for the Brewers, as Jackson Chourio missed the first six weeks of the season with a hand injury. Add in the loss of Freddy Peralta to an offseason trade, and there were a lot of holes to fill early in the season. But now, both sluggers are back and have made the Brewers’ offense one to reckon with.

All five NL Central teams will end Sunday’s action over .500, a continuing trend for the division. The Brewers and Cardinals enter Sunday tied in second, 1.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs. Now, with their two offensive stars back, Milwaukee can make a serious charge for its second straight division title.

The Brewers head to Wrigley Field for three with the Cubs coming up.
