Brandon Marsh talks baserunning blunder that doomed Phillies vs. Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies were playing from behind all night long on Tuesday against the Houston Astros, falling behind by five runs, 5-0, through the first four innings of the contest. But in the sixth inning, they were able to cut the deficit to just two runs thanks in large part to the two-run home run Trea Turner hit — turning momentum in their favor heading into the seventh inning.

Alas, the Phillies had a few baserunning miscues that ended up costing them some runs on the night. Perhaps the most damaging one of the night came courtesy of Brandon Marsh, who strayed too far away from second base with no outs in the inning and two runners in scoring position. As a result, Marsh got doubled up off of second base after JT Realmuto lined out to shortstop.

“With no outs, it’s unacceptable for me to take a step towards third. It’s a huge mistake by me. Really no excuse. Just a really bad play on my part. Gotta clean it up,” Marsh said, via Dave Uram of 94WIP. “I have to clean that up and be better in the future if we want to be where we want to be at the end of the year. That’s gotta be cleaned up. That’s on me.”

Marsh went from hero to zero in a hurry; he hit a run-scoring double that perhaps should have scored two runs for the Phillies. This put so much pressure on the Astros to execute. Alas, Philly ended up shooting itself on the foot, and this provides another painful learning experience for a team that’s already had plenty of these throughout the season.

The Phillies have had some major blunders on the basepaths in 2026, and these are mistakes they have to expunge from their system if they were to become a serious contender for the World Series title.
