Brandon Aiyuk ‘taught a lesson’ amid 49ers trade as $120m star’s Commanders move hits harsh reality
Brandon Aiyuk’s future remains unresolved.
One of the most talented, but troubled, wide receivers in the NFL is done with the San Francisco 49ers.

He needs to find a new home, but the Bay Area franchise aren’t in any rush to let him go, despite signing direct replacements.
Niners land new weapons to boost offense
San Francisco agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Christian Kirk on Monday.
He spent his 2025 season with the Houston Texans, but was hampered by injury.
Kirk managed 279 yards in three starts as he battled hamstring issues, but did show his worth with a 144-yard performance in the wild-card playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He’s the second veteran to join the Niners’ wide receiver room this offseason, and will suit up alongside Mike Evans.
Quarterback Brock Purdy‘s receiving corps will look very different in 2026, given Skyy Moore and Kendrick Bourne have already departed.
Jauan Jennings and Aiyuk are set to leave, and the latter has caused quite a headache in San Francisco.
How did Brandon Aiyuk’s relationship with the Niners break down?
His saga has unfolded over the past two years, following a breakout season in 2023, in which Aiyuk was one of the league’s best receivers.
He racked up an impressive 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in that campaign, which concluded when the Niners were beaten in overtime by the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
That effort earned Aiyuk a $120 million extension, which he signed on the eve of the 2024 season, having requested a trade earlier in the summer.

But despite that massive deal, everything came crashing down just two months later. The wideout tore his ACL and MCL in Week 7, and was sidelined for the rest of the year.
There was no return in 2025, either.
Aiyuk was placed on the PUP list as he worked his way back from the devastating knee injuries, but come November, San Francisco voided roughly $27m guaranteed money in his contract for 2026, due to lack of participation.
One month later, the Niners placed Aiyuk on their reserve/left squad list, and all signs pointed to an offseason divorce.
General manager John Lynch even confirmed in January that it’s ‘safe to say’ the wideout has played last snap with Niners, and suggested he had ghosted the team in recent months by failing to turn up to the facility or communicate with staff.
Star tight end George Kittle also revealed on Tuesday that the ‘last time’ he saw Aiyuk was in the early weeks of the 2025 season, before news of his voided money came out.

But with the new league year under way, the 28-year-old is still yet to depart the Bay Area.
Where could Brandon Aiyuk land in 2026?
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, San Francisco is in ‘no rush’ to see the back of Aiyuk, due to his financial situation.
“They continue to add more weapons,” Schefter said of the Niners.
“Christian Kirk becomes the latest wide receiver to catch up. And they’re gonna need bodies there.

“Listen, they’re gonna be moving on from Brandon Aiyuk at some point this offseason. But let’s keep in mind that Aiyuk has no more guaranteed money due. The 49ers are in no rush to do anything there. They will take their time.
“They’ll wait until they find, maybe there’s an offer or an opportunity out there from somebody that’s willing to give up something for an immensely talented but troubled wide receiver. We’ll see how that works out.”
Plenty of teams should be interested in Aiyuk, but San Francisco holds all the cards.
They can hold on to him through the 2026 NFL Draft, with hopes of flipping him for a pick at that point in time.

If a draft-day trade doesn’t materialize, only then will San Francisco’s front office have a decision to make, and could release him as a post-June 1 cut.
Essentially, the Niners think Aiyuk has trade value, and they can hold out for a deal.
The Washington Commanders were said to be front runners to land the struggling star, in a move that would reunite him with close friend and former Arizona State teammate Jayden Daniels.
San Francisco ‘teaching Aiyuk a lesson’ with lack of release
In fact, the team is believed to be well aware of Aiyuk’s desire to join, and the player himself is fighting to get into top physical shape after missing 2025.

But nothing has been confirmed yet, and one unnamed executive believes Aiyuk doesn’t actually hold any trade value, and that the Niners are just trying to ‘teach him a lesson.’
“You’re kidding right?” one general manager texted, when asked by OutKick’s Armando Salguero why he thought San Francisco hasn’t moved on from Aiyuk.
“They’re not getting anything significant for him in trade. I wouldn’t give anything for him, and everyone knows we need a receiver.
“Right now my guess is they’re teaching him a lesson in what it means to do right for your team.”
It’s a matter of when, not if, Aiyuk will leave the Niners. But the San Francisco front office appears happy to make him wait.
