NHL rumors: Senators have intriguing defenseman on trade block ahead of NHL Draft
The 2026 NHL Draft is just 11 days away. As the draft approaches, teams are figuring out their strategy and also looking to set up potential trades. Last year, the Ottawa Senators made a trade during the draft. The Senators traded for Jordan Spence from the Los Angeles Kings.
Now, the Sens could be making another trade ahead of the draft, once again involving Spence, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen.
“Three league executives told the Ottawa Citizen in the past 72 hours that the club is gauging the NHL’s trade market to see what they might be able to fetch in return for Spence, who is a restricted free agent with the right to file for arbitration,” Garrioch wrote.
Spence just finished a two-year deal that had an AAV of $1.5 million. He is a restricted free agent and will likely get a solid raise this offseason. He could command between $3 and $5 million per year on his next contract, depending on the length.
“David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period stated earlier this week that the club was trying to move Spence. We’re told that’s not because the Senators were the least bit disappointed in the way he played and may have more to do with what his camp is seeking on a long-term extension,” Garrioch continued.
Spence is coming off a solid first season with the Senators. He played in 73 games, finding the back of the net seven times while adding 24 assists. It gave him a career-high 31 points, while he was also a part of the power play unit. While he had a solid year, it may be his only one in Ottawa.
