Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Italy predictions
Italy are the joint-second most successful side in the history of the World Cup. Only Brazil have lifted the famous trophy more often than the Azzurri, who have gone all the way on four occasions.
Yet there are adults alive today who will not remember watching Italy at a World Cup finals. You probably have to be at least 24 to have ever seen them win a knockout match on the biggest stage of all.
Their last victory outside the group stage was the 2006 final. Four years later, Italy were knocked out after three winless games. They beat England in 2014, but defeats by Costa Rica and Uruguay saw them fall at the first hurdle once more.
Things got worse from there. Italy failed to qualify for 2018 after finishing behind Spain in their group, then losing to Sweden in the two-legged play-offs.
Even that was not the nadir. On the road to 2022, Italy were runners-up to Switzerland in their qualification group, before suffering an unthinkable home loss to North Macedonia in the semi-finals of the play-offs.
After their failures four and eight years ago, no Italian is taking anything for granted ahead of Tuesday’s tussle with Bosnia & Herzegovina.
After once again finishing second in their group, this time to Norway, Italy took care of business by beating Northern Ireland 2-0 in the last four of the play-offs. They are now one more victory away from announcing their return to the world stage
Bosnia have World Cup ambitions of their own. After participating in 2014, they also failed to make it to either Russia in 2018 or Qatar four years later.
Most pundits fancied Wales in their semi-final against Bosnia, even more so after Daniel James gave Craig Bellamy’s boys the lead early in the second half.
But Edin Dzeko restored parity with a headed equaliser late on at the Cardiff City Stadium, before Bosnia silenced the home crowd with a penalty shoot-out victory.
Sergej Barbarez’s side are potentially dangerous opponents for Italy. For one, they have home advantage in this one-off, make-or-break tie.
Secondly, they will embrace their status as underdogs, relishing the fact that all the pressure and expectation is on the shoulders of Italy.
Will the Azzurri hold their nerve, or might that group of young adults have to wait at least another four years to watch the four-time champions at the World Cup?
Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Italy betting tips
One of Bosnia & Herzegovina or Italy will qualify for the World Cup on Tuesday – who will it be?
Italian clean sheet?
This is a test of Italy’s nerve as much as of their footballing ability.
It is not unfair to Bosnia & Herzegovina to say that Italy’s team contains more quality than theirs. But whereas Bosnia will see this as a free hit, the Azzurri are obliged to win.
Given their aforementioned slip-ups against Sweden and North Macedonia in previous play-off campaigns, Italy are not immune to letting the pressure get too much for them.
But Gattuso will have spent the last few days ensuring his players take nothing for granted. With an emphasis on a solid defence first and foremost, Italy can get the job done on Tuesday.

Goals at a premium
The stakes could not be higher for both Bosnia & Herzegovina and Italy.
One of those two teams will suffer World Cup heartbreak on Tuesday, and the other will feel utter jubilation at booking a place at the finals. There is no in-between.
Given this is a make-or-break situation, we might not see much in the way of free-flowing football. Throwing caution to the wind is unwise in circumstances like this.
This has the potential to be an absorbing encounter, but it will not necessarily be a goal-laden one.

Kean one to watch
Italy opted for a two-man frontline against Northern Ireland and we should see the same again here.
Moise Kean was more lively than his strike partner Mateo Retegui even before he found the back of the net in the 80th minute.
Kean had a fantastic season for Fiorentina last time out. Although la Viola have struggled for much of 2025/26, the former Everton man is currently one of the first names on the team sheet for both club and country.
Kean has scored 12 goals in 25 appearances for Italy, a healthy return on which he can improve on Tuesday.
