Blue Jays trade for pitcher who was DFA’d by Twins

The Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins reportedly agreed to a trade on Wednesday. The Blue Jays are acquiring starting pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. Minnesota is receiving cash considerations in return.

Woods Richardson was once a former top prospect with the Blue Jays. He was acquired by the Twins in the Jose Berrios trade. With Berrios currently dealing with an injury, Toronto needed pitching depth. Woods Richardson was recently designated for assignment by the Twins, which is a move that clearly caught the attention of the Blue Jays.

Woods Richardson, 25, made his MLB debut with Minnesota in 2022. He ultimately appeared in 65 total games with the Twins, but he never pitched up to his full potential. Woods Richardson recorded a 4.76 ERA across his 302.1 innings of work on the mound.

So far in 2026, Woods Richardson has made 12 appearances (10 starts) and turned in a lackluster 7.74 ERA. The Twins ultimately made the decision to designate him for assignment, and now he is headed back to the Blue Jays.

It remains to be seen what his role will be with Toronto. The Blue Jays will certainly benefit from the pitching depth, though.

Toronto entered its game on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Braves with a 29-32 record. After reaching the World Series last season, the Blue Jays have underperformed so far during the 2026 season. They are currently in fourth place in the competitive American League East division.

Perhaps Simeon Woods Richardson can give the ball club’s pitching a crucial boost.
