Blue Jays tie bonkers franchise record with 8-run 1st inning vs. Diamondbacks
The Toronto Blue Jays hope to return to the World Series in 2026. If they play consistently like they started on Sunday, it is likely they will do that. Toronto scored eight runs in the first inning of their game Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
That offensive onslaught turned out to be quite special. In fact, it was historic.
“The eight consecutive batters reaching base and the seven consecutive base hits to start a game ties a Blue Jays’ franchise record, per (MLB reporter) Sarah Langs,” USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Toronto also knocked out Arizona’s starting pitcher quite early from the game.
“The Toronto Blue Jays, who have lost 12 of their last 15 games, unleash their frustrations in the 1st inning today vs. D-backs starter Ryne Nelson, knocking him out of game after 10 batters with 8-0 lead,” Nightengale added.
The Blue Jays are out to a cold start to the season. Toronto has a 7-13 record heading into Sunday, and looking for wins. Toronto has lost four in a row entering Sunday’s matchup with Arizona.
The team’s overall results are clearly disappointing to fans. Toronto just made the 2025 World Series, where the club lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games. There was hope that Toronto could get right back there in 2026.
That hope is taking a hit, but Sunday’s hot start could reignite the team. Toronto got a slew of hits to get the runners moving in the first inning against Arizona.
The Blue Jays and Diamondbacks continue to play at time of writing on Sunday. Toronto is currently in last place in the American League East standings.
