Blue Jays rumors: Toronto willing to take on more salary at trade deadline

Heading into Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays’ 37-38 record has them nine games out of the AL East but currently in a tie for the third Wild Card spot. The franchise knows they’ll need a bit more firepower to go on another deep playoff run.

The Blue Jays’ $282.5 million payroll is third-highest in MLB, via Spotrac. However, in chase of playoff glory, Toronto is willing to add even more salary come trade deadline, via Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic.

“The Toronto Blue Jays already are well above the highest luxury-tax threshold, but at least one rival club is under the impression the team would take on additional payroll to get the offense it needs,” Rosenthal wrote.

As it stands, the Blue Jays rank 24th in the league with 306 runs scored. The franchise still has played like Vlad Guerrero Jr, George Springer and Alejandro Kirk. But it’s clear their lineup still needs some juice.

To their credit, a number of their hitters are currently banged up. Namely, Dalton Varsho and Anthony Santander remain on the injured list. Upon their return, the Blue Jays should theoretically look much scarier offensively.

But Toronto has World Series aspirations. They want their lineup to be as dangerous as possible. When the trade deadline rolls around, they will have their eyes on all the big bats available.

If the Blue Jays are able to secure a deal is yet to be seen. But Toronto is at least entering the deadline with clear intentions to boost their contender status.
