Bears’ Ben Johnson makes ‘big weapon’ prediction for speedy rookie
While the Chicago Bears traded away wide receiver DJ Moore, they still have plenty of firepower to work with in the passing department. They added even more ammunition when they selected fellow receiver Zavion Thomas in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Head coach Ben Johnson clearly had an affinity for Thomas when he turned his draft card in. But after watching him during offseason workouts, Johnson is only more convinced Thomas will be a crucial difference maker, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
“He tends to make a play almost every single day right now that says, OK, if we can harness all of this energy and make sure that we can trust him and he’s going to align where he needs to and run the route the way we need him to, that we really could use him and he could be a big weapon for us this year,” Johnson said.
Thomas spent two years at Mississippi State before transferring to LSU. Over his 48 games total, the receiver made 106 grabs for 1,213 yards and seven touchdowns. He set career-highs in receptions (41) and touchdowns (four) as a senior, gaining 488 yards through the air.
While his numbers may not jump off the page, his 40-yard dash time certainly does. Thomas ran a 4.28 40 at the NFL scouting combine. Johnson’s eyebrows were definitely raised.
Now, he’ll have an opportunity to use him in his offense. As a rookie, Thomas will still need to prove he is ready for NFL-level competition. But based on his early returns, the Bears at least are confident in the receiver’s abilities.
