BCCI set to discuss retirement policy for Indian cricketers in Apex meeting
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to discuss a potential retirement policy for Indian cricketers during its Apex Council meeting on Thursday, June 4. According to the reports, the proposed move comes amid growing concerns over players retiring from Indian cricket and quickly making themselves available for overseas T20 leagues.
The discussion has gained momentum following the recent case of Vijay Shankar. The all-rounder announced his retirement from Indian cricket and soon after became eligible to participate in foreign franchise competitions. He was subsequently signed by the Kandy Royals for the 2026 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
As per Cricbuzz report, the BCCI is looking to examine whether a formal policy is required to regulate the transition of retired Indian players into overseas leagues. While Indian cricketers are currently barred from participating in foreign T20 leagues during their active careers, retirement has often served as the pathway for players seeking opportunities outside the country.
The issue is not entirely new. Several former Indian cricketers have taken a similar route in the past. Former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik featured in overseas franchise cricket after stepping away from Indian cricket, while Yuvraj Singh, Unmukt Chand, Praveen Tambe, and Irfan Pathan have also been associated with leagues across different countries following retirement.
The BCCI has traditionally maintained a strict stance on protecting its domestic structure and the Indian Premier League (IPL), often citing concerns related to player availability and the overall ecosystem of Indian cricket. However, the increasing number of players exploring overseas opportunities after retirement has reportedly prompted the board to revisit the subject.
On the other hand, the meeting will also have a strong discussion on Suryakumar Yadavâs future as Indiaâs T20I captain. If the reports are to be believed, he is set to be dropped from the Indian team despite leading them to T20 World Cup 2026 glory. There will also be discussions on whom to appoint India's T20 captain after Suryakumar Yadav.Â
