Bayern Munich vs Borussia Monchengladbach predictions

Realistically speaking, Borussia Dortmund’s clash with Bayern Munich last weekend was make or break for their Bundesliga title ambitions.

A Dortmund victory would have narrowed the gap between the two contenders to five points. Bayern would still have been favourites, but BVB would have given them something to think about.

In the end, though, Vincent Kompany’s men proved too strong. They did not have everything their own way at Signal Iduna Park, but Bayern ultimately deserved their 3-2 triumph.

Dortmund led at the interval via a Nico Schlotterbeck goal, but a brace from Harry Kane turned the match on its head. Dortmund then levelled through Daniel Svensson, only for Joshua Kimmich to convert the winner in the 87th minute.

Bayern now boast an 11-point lead over Dortmund. With just 10 rounds of fixtures remaining, it is fair to say the Bavarians have one hand on the Bundesliga trophy.

“That was extreme today,” Kompany said after the match. “You could feel that Dortmund desperately wanted to seize their opportunity. We noticed that throughout the entire 90 minutes. 

“Even after the [equaliser for] 2-2, they kept pushing forward. They were determined to win. But our lads didn’t just sit back either. We kept trying to create our chances.”

Kompany would never admit it publicly, but he knows deep down that Bayern are almost there. The pressure is off in the Bundesliga, leaving the team free to prioritise the Champions League.

Bayern’s financial might relative to the rest of German football means the title alone is rarely sufficient to satisfy the board and the fan base.

Anything less than a semi-final berth in the Champions League would be seen as a disappointment. Bayern will already have one eye on next week’s last-16 first leg against Atalanta.

It is only natural for Kompany to be thinking about that game already, and Bayern do not have to be at their absolute best to beat Borussia Monchengladbach.

The title is not quite in the bag yet, though, so it is important that Bayern do not get too distracted by Europe. It is one thing to ease off a little in the Bundesliga and another to let standards slip so much that Bayern start to drop points.

Bayern to dominate

Borussia Monchengladbach are having a difficult campaign. The bottom half of the table is tight, so Gladbach are only three points above the relegation play-off place despite being 12th.

They beat Union Berlin 1-0 last time out, but that came after a seven-match winless streak for Eugen Polanski’s team.

Even if Bayern are thinking about the Atalanta tie, they should still prove too strong for Gladbach on Friday.

Winning both halves of a match is not easy, even for dominant outfits like Bayern. But with home advantage behind them and Gladbach’s confidence fragile, the league leaders can do exactly that in this one.

One of the Bundesliga records that Bayern Munich have in their sights is the number of goals scored in a single season. 

In 24 games up to now, Kompany’s team have made the net bulge an extraordinary 88 times. That is the best ever return at this stage of the campaign, but Bayern still need another 14 to break the club’s own record from 1971/72.

At the rate they are going, they should set a new all-time high with several matches to spare. Remarkably, 75 percent of their league fixtures up to now have featured over 3.5 goals overall.

Borussia Monchengladbach will struggle to keep Bayern’s attackers quiet, so we should expect plenty of action in the final third on Friday.

Harry Kane requires 12 more goals to become the man with the most goals in a Bundesliga season, an honour currently held by Robert Lewandowski with 41.

Meanwhile, Thomas Muller will be concerned about his record of 21 assists in a campaign, set in 2019/20.
