Bayern Munich chief reveals timeline for Harry Kane contract talks

Former Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge will discuss a contract extension with Harry Kane ‘at some stage after the season’.

Kane’s current deal with the German giants is due to expire at the end of the 2026/27 campaign.

Despite the fact Kane will be 33 when that rolls around, Rummenigge, who is now on Bayern’s supervisory board, is keen to keep the superstar in Bavaria for a little while longer.

Rummenigge lifts lid on Bayern’s plans to extend Kane’s deal

“Getting Harry Kane to Munich was an important coup in the history of the club,” Rummenigge told German publication t-online.

“It is known that he had a release clause. He didn’t trigger that and signalled he would definitely stay in Munich.

“And, as agreed, those responsible in the operational area will hold talks with him at some stage after the season with the clear aim of extending his contract.”

What was Kane’s release clause and when was it active?

Kane was ripe to be poached by a rival club in January due to a £57million release clause that was active throughout the month.

Several clubs, including Barcelona and former employers Tottenham Hotspur, were linked with a cut-price swoop for the 32-year-old.

Despite the opportunity to nab one of the world’s best strikers on the cheap, Kane stayed put.

It’s proved to be a wise decision as Kane recently scooped up his second successive Bundesliga crown.

Kane’s season of dreams

Kane has also enjoyed tremendous success on an individual basis this term, too.

The 32-year-old cracked a half-century of goals during Bayern’s thrilling 4-3 win over Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Impressively, Kane reached 50 goals for the season in just 42 games, underlining his remarkable ability in front of goal that has him a serious contender

Kane also scored his 500th career goal in February, doing so in fewer games than Cristiano Ronaldo.

A month later and Kane was celebrating his 50th Champions League goal during Bayern’s 4-1 win over Atalanta.

What made Kane’s European feat all the more special was the fact he hit the 50-goal mark in only 66 games.

It meant Kane became the third-fastest to reach 50 Champions League goals, behind only Erling Haaland and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who did so in 49 and 62 games respectively.

However, one record which Kane does not look set to break is the most goals scored by an individual during a Bundesliga season.

That record belongs to Robert Lewandowski, who netted an absurd 41 times during the 2020/21 term in just 29 games.

Kane brought up his 33rd Bundesliga goal of the season on Saturday during Bayern’s epic 4-3 win over Mainz.

The Bavarian giants were 3-0 down at half-time but roared back in emphatic fashion, with Kane scoring what proved to be the winner in the 83rd minute.

If Kane is to break Lewandowski’s record, he needs to score nine times in three games to do so.
