Atalanta vs Napoli predictions
You can guarantee that a team managed by Antonio Conte will not give up without a fight. But while the Fat Lady has not started singing yet, she is beginning to warm up her vocal chords.
With 13 rounds of Serie A games remaining, it looks like Napoli’s race is run. They trail Inter by 11 points and the bookies duly have the Nerazzurri down as strong favourites for the scudetto.
If anyone can catch them, it will probably be AC Milan. They trail their city rivals by seven points and are therefore four better off than Napoli.
The Partenopei have never retained the Serie A title before and it looks like they will not do so this year either.
What has gone wrong? The first thing to say is that Inter have been magnificent. They may have lost 3-1 to Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League in midweek, but back home they have been consistently excellent for some time now.
Inter have taken 37 points from the last 39 on offer. Their only slip in that time came against Napoli. Even then, Christian Chivu’s charges still managed to avoid defeat by the champions.
Napoli’s form has not been terrible. They have won three of their last five matches. But with Inter in such a relentless mood, any slip-ups have been punished. A 3-0 defeat by Juventus in January and a 2-2 draw with Roma last time out saw Napoli fall further adrift of top spot.
Injuries certainly have not helped. Kevin De Bruyne, Billy Gilmour, David Neres, Matteo Politano, Frank Zambo Anguissa, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic and Amir Rrahmani have all missed significant chunks of the campaign.
Conte has also hinted that Napoli made too many changes to their squad last summer, although that complaint should be taken with a pinch of salt given the Italian is usually bemoaning a lack of investment by the clubs he has managed.
Perhaps the hunger levels have dipped too. Conte’s record cannot be argued with, but his teams tend to do brilliantly early on before burning out quickly. He has not won back-to-back titles since leaving Juventus in 2014.
“I think what we are doing this season is incredibly positive, in the circumstances,” Conte said last week.
“As for the scudetto, there’s a nine-point gap (now 11). We have serious problems and you are talking about the scudetto. Come on.”
Atalanta vs Napoli betting tips
It is sixth against third in Serie A as Atalanta and Napoli butt heads in Bergamo.
Atalanta to start quickly
Atalanta lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League play-off on Tuesday, leaving them in a precarious position at the midway point of the tie.
Atalanta cannot afford to look ahead to the return fixture, though. They are locked in a battle to qualify for next year’s edition of Europe’s premier tournament.
Raffaele Palladino’s team are five points adrift of fourth place at present, so they need every point they can get.
Atalanta tend to start games quickly, particularly in front of their own fans. Only Inter have a better first-half record in home matches. Napoli could be behind at the interval.

Goals await in Bergamo
Napoli’s recent games have not been short of goals.
There was a 2-2 draw against Roma, a 3-2 victory over Genoa, a 3-2 loss to Chelsea, a 3-0 defeat by Juventus – and that is all in the last month.
With that in mind, over 2.5 goals looks generously priced. Atalanta are not the most free-scoring side in the division and their defensive record is pretty good, but this wager has paid out in each of their last four matches at the New Balance Arena.
This promises to be an entertaining encounter between two teams who will not accept defeat.

Scamacca can strike
Followers of the Premier League will remember Gianluca Scamacca from his disappointing spell at West Ham United.
Scamacca did not live up to expectations at the London Stadium, but he has been a much more effective striker in Serie A.
The Italy international needs one more goal to reach double figures in all competitions for 2025/26, and at the odds available it is worth backing him to do it this weekend.
Napoli’s defence has looked vulnerable of late, so Scamacca and Atalanta should get chances on Sunday.
