Astros closer Josh Hader likely to begin injury rehab assignment soon

The Houston Astros are monitoring encouraging progress from closer Josh Hader as he moves closer to a return from injury.

Hader took a significant step forward Saturday, completing a 25-pitch live batting practice session at Daikin Park. His fastball reached 93–94 mph, an encouraging sign as he continues to build strength.

The session followed a series of bullpen outings in which the star closer has gradually increased intensity. The Astros have approached his recovery similarly to a spring training ramp-up, placing importance on each step in the process.

MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart shared an update on X, formerly Twitter, detailing Hader’s progress and outlining his next steps.

“Josh Hader threw 25 pitches during his live BP session today on the mound at Daikin Park. He hit 93-94 mph, which is on target. He will throw another live BP on Tuesday, after which he should be headed out on a rehab assignment.”

Hader will throw another live session Tuesday, and if that outing goes well, he will begin a minor league rehab assignment, marking his first game action of the season.

The Astros placed the six-time All-Star on the injured list earlier this year with left biceps tendinitis before transferring him to the 60-day IL to provide additional rehabilitation time. His current timeline points to a potential return later in May.

Houston has felt the impact of the 32-year-old closer’s absence in the bullpen. Late-game struggles and inconsistent relief performances have increased pressure on the pitching staff and disrupted established roles.

The Astros remain focused on ensuring Hader returns at full strength. His recent progress suggests that goal is within reach, and the team hopes a rehab assignment will lead to a smooth transition back into the closer role.

Without the southpaw, the Astros have cycled through multiple late-inning arms, searching for consistency in high-leverage situations but have failed to find it.
