The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason with one question hanging over Sonny Gray. Garrett Crochet acknowledged that retirement is a real possibility after Boston’s Wild Card sweep by the New York Yankees. Gray, who joined the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals last offseason, delivered an ace-level season. He finished 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA and 4.3 WAR. Now, his next move remains uncertain.
Boston Globe reporter Tim Healey asked Gray whether Boston could remain a destination if he pitches in 2027.
“I don’t know,” Gray said.
That answer leaves the Red Sox staring at a rotation decision. Gray turns 37 in November, but his production suggests he can still help a contender. His future may come down to something bigger than numbers. Family, timing, and the chance to walk away on his own terms could matter just as much.
Red Sox' Garrett Crochet offers emotional Sonny Gray message
Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo shared Crochet’s reaction as Gray weighs retirement.

I still think he’s got a lot to give the game, but there’s something to be said about going out on your own terms, I suppose. Whatever he ultimately decides, that’ll be something that as a team, we support him on. But it was a pleasure having him here in Boston.”
Crochet’s message captured the mood after a painful ending. Boston’s season ended quickly, with the Yankees sweeping the Wild Card series and sending the Red Sox home.
Still, Gray gave Boston stability all season. He became one of the club’s most reliable starters and finished with some of the best numbers of his career. Under the postseason lights, his final appearance may have become his final MLB start.
If so, Sonny Gray would leave on his terms. If not, could one more season with the Red Sox be waiting?
