Sonny Dykes is in his fifth season as the head coach of TCU football. Last offseason, TCU gave Dykes a massive extension, but this season has not gone as planned. TCU is 3-4 this year, with the only power conference win being over Baylor. The poor performance has put Dykes on the hot seat.

While Dykes may be in jeopardy of losing his job, there is one major factor at play that could change everything, according to John Talty, Matt Zenitz, and Chris Hummer of CBS Sports.

“One thing to watch with TCU is the recent change in the school's chancellor. Daniel Pullin resigned recently after just 17 months, and the university's former chancellor, Victor Boschini Jr., stepped back into the role. Boschini helped hire Dykes. But as some have pointed out: He's the same chancellor who was part of the decision-making group to move on from Gary Patterson, believing the program needed a spark,” the trio wrote.

Dykes took over TCU in 2022, coming over from SMU. In his first season, he led the Horned Frogs to the national championship game. Still, they have had just two winning seasons since. After going 13-2 in his first season, Dykes is just 26-19.

Boschini showed a lot of patience with Gary Patterson, which could be good news for Dykes. Patterson went 181-79 at TCU, but struggled in his last few seasons, leading to his dismissal as the head coach. Meanwhile, Dykes is coming of back-to-back 9-4 season. While this is clearly a down year, Boschini being back in the role could help his cause.
