Florida State is 3-4 this year. After the double-overtime loss to Miami in their last game, there was even more uncertainty around the future of head coach Mike Norvell. The Florida State school president wrote a letter to fans, sympathizing with their frustration, but not mentioning Norvell's future.

Now, the reason Norvell still has a job is being revealed, per John Talty, Matt Zenitz, and Chris Hummer of CBSSports.

“The FSU coach's fate has never been totally predetermined; some industry sources still believe Norvell has a chance to keep his job going into 2027. The key factors there: some important FSU folks are rooting for Norvell to succeed and believe it's been more of an institutional problem than a coaching one; the school doesn't have a permanent athletic director, and there's that big $50 million buyout to deal with,” the trio wrote.

After a successful stint at Memphis, Norvell was named the head coach at Florida State going into the 2020 season. After a 3-6 season in 2020 and a 5-7 season in 2021, Norvell had the Seminoles moving in the right direction. In 2022, the team went 10-2, and then won the ACC Championship in 2023. Despite being 13-0, the team was left out of the College Football Playoff due to their starting quarterback being injured. They lost the Orange Bowl, and since then, it's been a disaster. FSU is just 10-22 since the Orange Bowl loss.

Still, making a coaching change will be costly for Florida State. Paying a coach nearly $50 million to not coach, while also being nearly a half billion dollars in debt, could be a hard pill to swallow. Still, if FSU wants to get back to winning, it may need to happen.
