With the speculation around the Rutgers football team about whether they will fire head coach Greg Schiano, it keeps amplifying after every loss, as the program is 2-5 after last Saturday's 42-14 loss to Northwestern. As rumors continue around Schiano and the Rutgers football program, the latest report suggests that the hot seat may not be as scorching as some seem.

According to CBS Sports' John Talty, Matt Zenitz, and Chris Hummer, the Scarlett Knight's gig is “less likely to open than the public thinks, at least for now.” Despite the disappointing results, the insiders mention how the $17 million buyout is “more burdensome” for the program.

“Despite considerable outside speculation about Greg Schiano's future, multiple industry sources believe the job is less likely to open than the public thinks, at least for now,” Talty, Zenitz, and Hummer wrote. “Schiano's $17 million-plus buyout is more burdensome for the Rutgers athletic department than for many of its Power Four peers, as it faced a $78 million deficit in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Rutgers is 2-5 this season and has a challenging remaining schedule which includes Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska.”

This clashes with college football insider for On3 Sports Pete Nakos, who wrote Sunday that Schiano is “on the hot seat and real conversations about his future have begun.” Schiano has been around the Rutgers football team for a long time, with his first tenure going from 2001 to 2011, then returning in 2020.

While it remains to be seen if or when Schiano is fired, he looks to lead the Scarlett Knights on Saturday against the Michigan Wolverines.
