The Tampa Bay Rays have extended the World Series after falling behind 3-0. Now, they have an opportunity to accomplish something no team has ever done: win Game 5 after initially trailing 0-3 in the Fall Classic.
According to Sarah Langs, the Rays are the fifth team to force a Game 5 in the World Series after losing the first three games. The 2024 New York Yankees, 1970 Cincinnati Reds, 1937 New York Giants and 1910 Chicago Cubs also reached that point, but none managed to force a Game 6.
Tampa Bay has already given itself a chance to change that history. The Rays became the first team since 1910 to hit a walk-off in the World Series while trailing three games to none, keeping their championship hopes alive with a dramatic win in Game 4.
Now, they need one more victory to send the series back to Milwaukee and continue a comeback that would rank among the most remarkable in baseball history. Milwaukee will send Jacob Misiorowski to the mound as it attempts to close out the series. Tampa Bay will go with Drew Rasmussen.
Article Continues BelowThe odds remain stacked against the Rays, but that is part of what makes this opportunity so compelling. They have already survived elimination once, and another win would give them a chance to keep pushing the boundaries of what has been possible in the World Series.
Sports are special because history can happen when nobody expects it. The Rays are not just trying to extend their season anymore; they are chasing a milestone that has eluded every team before them. If Tampa Bay can win Game 5, it will become the first team to force a sixth game after initially falling behind 0-3 in the World Series, giving baseball fans another reason to believe the impossible might be within reach.
