The New England Patriots pulled off an upset against the Buffalo Bills, 29-26, in Week 4 at New Highmark Stadium, with Efton Chism III sealing the win with a one-handed catch for a 23-yard touchdown.
Chism, who connected with Drake Maye, was an unlikely hero, helping the Patriots improve to 2-2 and boost their confidence amid a subpar start. The Bills, meanwhile, fell to 3-1.
Despite his impressive play, the 24-year-old wide receiver received a backhanded compliment from CJ Gardner-Johnson: “A practice squad player made a hell of a play.”
When asked to respond, Chism refused to clap back, as reported by the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed.
“He's a great player. They're a great team. I got a bunch of respect for him, but we're excited for this week. Looking forward to the (Las Vegas) Raiders,” said the second-year pass-catcher.
Kill with kindness, as the adage goes.
Chism, who went undrafted in 2025, had two receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown. Last season, he appeared in eight games, tallying three receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown.
Coach Mike Vrabel was not as diplomatic as Chism, unleashing a savage remark on Gardner-Johnson.

With the Patriots still groping for form, Chism's surprise performance could be the much-needed spark. Chism's number was called after Mack Hollins left in the third quarter due to a calf injury, and he did not disappoint.
New England will host the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday.
