Manny Machado just cannot escape the demons of Petco Park.

Nine years after Adam Jones famously robbed Machado of a home run during the 2017 World Baseball Classic, the Padres star suffered an eerily similar fate in the exact same part of the ballpark during the most important game of San Diego's season.

Machado appeared to have tied Game 4 of the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers with a two-run home run in the eighth inning. Instead, Garrett Mitchell reached over the wall and took the potential game-tying blast away from Machado, leaving the Padres stunned and eventually eliminating them from the postseason.

The ball didn't travel far enough, and not to take anything away from Mitchell, but it was about as easy a home run robbery as you will ever see. It was not close to the level of flair that Adam Jones proved nine years ago. Still, a robbery is a robbery.

The moment immediately brought back memories of 2017, when Machado represented the Dominican Republic against the United States in the WBC semifinals. Jones, who was Machado's teammate with the Baltimore Orioles at the time, made an incredible leaping catch (extending his entire body) at the wall to rob his teammate of a home run.

Jones is also a San Diego native, making the connection to Machado's latest heartbreak even more fitting. He was watching the Padres and Brewers battle it out in Game 4, and he couldn't believe what he was seeing when Mitchell made his spectacular catch.

Jones took to X and offered a one-word reaction to the unbelievable moment: “wow,” accompanied by shocked-face emojis.

For Machado, it was another brutal reminder of just how cruel baseball can be. Machado has hit more home runs at Petco Park than anyone in MLB history, making the stadium one of the most familiar places in baseball for him. Yet somehow, twice in his career, he has had a potential home run taken away from him at the same spot on the biggest stages.
