Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy had a one-word message for his son, Kai Murphy, after Milwaukee eliminated the San Diego Padres from the NLDS on Wednesday night.

Kai, a 26-year-old outfielder in San Diego’s minor-league system, joined his father on the Petco Park field after the Brewers’ 3-1 Game 4 victory clinched the series. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Curt Hogg took to X, formerly Twitter, early Thursday with a photo he captured of the father and son smiling after the win. Hogg noted Kai’s Padres affiliation before sharing Murphy’s brief memo to his son after Milwaukee ended San Diego’s season.

“Sorry,”

The moment came on the same field where Milwaukee had secured its fourth NLCS appearance and ended San Diego’s season.

The family connection added a personal layer to the Brewers' postseason breakthrough. Kai signed with the Padres as an undrafted free agent in 2022 after playing at Oregon State and Arizona State. He has since moved through San Diego’s minor-league system.

Murphy has managed the Brewers since 2024 and won National League Manager of the Year honors in both 2024 and 2025.

On the field, Garrett Mitchell tripled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning before robbing Manny Machado of a game-tying homer in the eighth. Jackson Chourio drove in Mitchell with a single.

The victory snapped the Brewers' 12-game postseason road losing streak and sent them to the NLCS for a second consecutive season. Milwaukee finished the 2026 regular season with an MLB-best 103-59 record and will now face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a rematch of the 2025 NLCS.
