With Connor Hellebuyck finally getting his trade request fulfilled by the Winnipeg Jets last week, the Dylan Larkin saga with the Detroit Red Wings is drawing even more scrutiny.
The story took another twist Thursday. As multiple NHL insiders reported, Larkin is frustrated that the front office hasn't yet moved him and isn't planning to play again in the near future.
The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported that Larkin's representatives spoke with Detroit on Wednesday night and again Thursday morning, communicating that the forward feels he's given the team ample time since his trade request in May to get a deal done.
LeBrun reported that Larkin “has had enough” and won't play Thursday or for the foreseeable future in hopes of accelerating a move. The situation remains fluid, with Detroit circling back to interested teams as talks escalate.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman added more detail shortly afterward, reporting that Larkin had decided to sit out in an effort to accelerate a move after feeling he had “done right by them playing through his request.”
“The Red Wings have made it very clear they have a certain bar that must be leaped for anyone to acquire Larkin, but it’s clear he wants to give this a tush-push over the goal line,” Friedman reported.
Detroit coach Todd McLellan confirmed Thursday morning that Larkin wouldn't play that night. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff is expected to release a statement.
TSN's Darren Dreger reported that the team could suspend Larkin — as the Jets did with Hellebuyck — meaning he would forfeit $41,237.11 in salary each day.
Article Continues BelowLarkin's agent Pat Brisson flew to Detroit earlier this week to meet with him face-to-face following a four-game road trip in which the team went 2-1-1.
The decision raises the possibility that Larkin has played his final game in a Red Wings uniform. Whether a move is any closer remains unknown, despite the former captain expanding his list of approved destinations from 10 teams to 12.
The Wings welcome Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks to Little Caesars Arena on Thursday, with puck drop set for just past 7 p.m. ET.
