Despite being selected in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft, Washington Capitals forward Ivan Miroshnichenko has struggled to secure a regular spot in the lineup amid a surplus of effective forwards — and the team reportedly gave him and his agent permission to seek a trade late last week.
As The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reported this week, Washington general manager Chris Patrick is believed to be in talks with multiple clubs, including the Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks.
“A lot of teams out west, a lot of teams in the Pacific,” Pagnotta said during Wednesday's edition of DFO Insider with Jeff Marek.
Pagnotta mentioned the Hawks and explained that the Capitals could be looking to trade Miroshnichenko out of the Eastern Conference altogether.
“The Philadelphia Flyers have checked in on him, but I don’t think there’s a fit there,” the hockey insider added. “I think Washington, to your point, wants him out of the East, especially out of the division.
“I think a few other Eastern teams have checked in as well. But Vancouver, Seattle, L.A., Calgary, I think among the teams that are poking around on him to try to see if they can make something work.”
According to Marek, Washington wants to recoup at least the type of asset it used to select him in the first place: “at least a first-round pick.”
The 22-year-old Miroshnichenko is in the first year of a two-year pact that pays him an AAV of $925,000. The former Hershey Bear has chipped in one goal in three games in 2026-27 while averaging a shade over 11 minutes of ice time.
Overall in the NHL, he's appeared in 55 games, scoring six goals and 14 total points.
Washington boasts one of the deeper forward groups in the National Hockey League, and beyond the offseason additions of Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner, the club is getting contributions from up and down the lineup.
Proving that point is Ryan Leonard, who is playing in the bottom six but is fourth on the team in scoring with eight points in 11 games.
Miroshnichenko was excellent in the American Hockey League, amassing 42 points in 53 games with the Hershey Bears in 2024-25 and adding another 34 points in 41 games last year. He also won a Calder Cup with the team in 2024.
But the Ussuriysk native has struggled to establish himself in the nation's capital, and the front office looks ready to pull the trigger on a trade if the right offer comes along.
