Connor McDavid continued his absolutely torrid start to the 2026-27 season in the Battle of Alberta on Wednesday night, recording two assists and leading his Edmonton Oilers to a 4-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place.
Not only did the NHL's best player pad his stats to the tune of a league-leading 36 points in just 13 games, he also broke a record co-held by Wayne Gretzky.
With assists in 13 consecutive contests to start the season, McDavid passed the 12-game mark shared by Gretzky (1982-83), Sebastian Aho (2018-19) and Ken Linseman (1985-86), according to NHL.com's Gerry Moddejonge.
Still, the captain was quick to deflect the attention from personal achievement to team accomplishment after the triumph.
“We wanted to win the game, that was first and foremost. I thought the game was pretty solid, it’s what we needed to do tonight,” McDavid told reporters.
“Calgary had been playing really, really well and scoring lots of goals. We had to defend hard and find a way to get a win.”
Edmonton snapped Calgary's four-game winning streak with its ninth victory in 13 games.
Tristan Jarry made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season, while Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen and Alex Formenton scored for 9-2-2 Edmonton.
It's been a terrific start for McDavid and his team; he's far and away the league's most productive player, while the Oilers are in first place in the Western Conference and two points back of the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes in the early Presidents' Trophy race.
Article Continues BelowNo. 97 also registered his second career month with at least 25 assists, having recorded 25 in February 2024. He joins Gretzky, who accomplished the feat 14 times, and Mario Lemieux, who did it thrice, per Moddejonge.
He is now four games away from matching his career-long 17-game point streak, and the way he's playing, nobody would be too surprised if he got onto the scoresheet in each of Edmonton's next four contests.
Up next is a three-game road trip, which begins against the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon. The Oilers then head to New York City to play the Rangers on Sunday before travelling to Newark to take on the New Jersey Devils next Tuesday.
