The 2026 Major League Baseball is season is over, and there is continued speculation about what will happen with MLB in 2027. There are also many questions about what teams will do this offseason in regard to player trades. A new report is dropping a powerful rumor about the future of several top baseball players.

“Hearing MLB trade candidates with 1 year of control left — Logan Gilbert, Steven Kwan, Joe Ryan, Sandy Alcántara, et al — are unlikely to be moved for prospects this month, because teams aren’t sure what kind of 2027 season to expect,” MLB reporter Jon Morosi posted to X, formerly Twitter. “However, sources say pending free agents could be moved *for each other* as a way to balance the risk.”

The 2027 season is in limbo as the players' union tries to work out a new collective bargaining agreement with MLB owners. While owners want a salary cap in baseball, the union has been reluctant to accept that.

MLB leadership recently proposed delaying the implementation of a salary cap to the 2028 season. That doesn't seem to be going over well.

“Coming off another incredible season of baseball, MLB owners continue to propose blowing up the current system and replacing it with one designed to line their pockets and increase their franchise values,” the MLBPA said in a statement, per ESPN. “… Players stand ready to negotiate in good faith toward a new CBA that will capitalize on our sport's unprecedented momentum and benefit players, clubs, and fans alike.”

Owners insist a salary cap would work to everyone's benefit.

“This proposal would allow a smoother transition into the cap and floor system without delaying key player benefits, including earlier free agency, a $1 million minimum salary, a 30% increase to the pre-arbitration bonus pool, and transactional reform that will reduce roster churn,” MLB said in part in a statement.

Time will tell how these labor talks affect the future of several MLB players.
