Breanna Stewart has accomplished just about everything in the WNBA. The New York Liberty superstar, though, has now experienced a postseason first she would rather forget. New York’s championship defense ended Saturday with an 85-83 loss to the Atlanta Dream in Game 3 of the second round. It completed a stunning sweep at Barclays Center. According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, the defeat marks the first time in Stewart’s professional career that one of her teams has been swept in a WNBA playoff series.

The two-time MVP did everything she could to keep New York alive. Stewart poured in 26 points alongside Jonquel Jones, who also finished with 26. However, their combined production was not enough to prevent Atlanta from closing out the series and sending the defending champions into an unexpectedly early offseason. Stewart walked off the floor with visible sadness and a towel draped over her. It was a painful conclusion to a campaign that began with championship aspirations. For a player accustomed to deep postseason runs and championship celebrations, this sweep represents an unfamiliar kind of disappointment.

New York’s 2026 season was a roller coaster from the start. The Liberty finished 26-18 and entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed. However, their talent consistently suggested they were capable of far more. Stewart, Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu helped power the team to a Commissioner’s Cup title. Meanwhile, New York stunned the basketball world by sweeping top-seeded Minnesota in the opening round. That breakthrough made the semifinal matchup with Atlanta an opportunity to extend an improbable title defense. Instead, the Dream exposed the Liberty’s vulnerabilities and ended their postseason run without a win. Stewart’s personal milestone adds another sting to the defeat. This leaves New York with difficult questions to answer before attempting another championship push.
