The Minnesota Timberwolves are hoping for a big season after trading for LaMelo Ball to pair alongside Anthony Edwards. Additionally, the Wolves announced a big night coming on February 28, 2027, when the franchise will be retiring the jersey of former superstar Kevin Garnett.
“Minnesota is home,” Garnett said in a statement back on August 14th, when the night was announced. “That's never changed. This is where it all started for me, so seeing No. 21 go up in Target Center and sharing that moment with the fans, my family, teammates, coaches, and everyone who’s been part of this journey means everything. But I don’t see this as the end — I see it as a new beginning. Retiring the jersey is just the start of the next chapter in Minnesota, about building something that lives beyond the game. I’m excited to bring art, culture, and creativity back to this city in a real way — not just one night, but year-round. Through KG Certified, production, collectibles, and creative projects, I want to help build something fans can feel all year long, connecting the past, present, and future of this place.
“I also want to thank Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez for the energy, vision, and respect they’ve shown for the history while pushing things forward the right way. That matters. And I’m excited about this team. Watching Ant, JMac, and the guys grow, and seeing this next wave of the league, there’s a lot to look forward to. I’m still working, still building, still creating. KG Certified is growing, and I’ve got new ventures coming. But 21 being retired is forever — and it’s also just the beginning of something new. I can’t wait to be back in that building, feel that energy, and celebrate it with everybody. Let’s get it.””
Garnett recently made an appearance on the Out The Mud podcast with former NBA players Zach Randolph and Tony Allen. It was there that Garnett was asked about his impending jersey retirement and took a fun little jab at the Wolves for taking so long to decide to retire his jersey.
“They made a motherf*cker wait 10 years, b*tch ass ni**as,” Kevin Garnett joked. “It's all good. It's all good. We're gonna put 2-1 up there. Shout out to Marc [Lore] and Alex [Rodriguez] for getting it done. I appreciate those guys. I'm seen as real family and I get to come in here and, you know, tap back into the Minneapolis and Minnesota area so I'm gassed, yo. We're gonna put it up in the rafters, you know what I mean. I don't know what y'all expected.
Kevin Garnett had his No. 5 jersey retired with the Boston Celtics back on March 13, 2022. The power forward helped Boston to the 2008 NBA Finals and came within a handful of plays from winning the 2010 NBA Championship.
“I did it in Boston, and I was shocked that the people f*cked with me like that, but Minny, I know they f*ck with me like that.”

Kevin Garnett finished his NBA career 23rd all-time in points scored with 26,071, ninth all-time in total rebounds with 14,662 rebounds grabbed, and 19th in both steals and blocks with 1,859 and 2,037 respectively.
The Timberwolves will be taking on the Boston Celtics on Garnett's jersey retirement night February 28th, a thoughtful gesture to have it done so the two franchises he spent most of his time with will be present.
