The Giants hit their bye week in first place in the NFC East with a 4-2-1 record and that’s made the prospect of bolstering the roster in the trade market a popular topic of conversation around the team.
On Tuesday, General Manager Joe Schoen said at a press conference that the team’s players have “earned the right” to play in meaningful games in the final weeks of the season and that means the Giants will “canvas the league” to see if there are ways to increase the chances of that happening. Schoen t tcautioned that any potential move will have to fit both the team’s immediate needs as well as their future prospects.
“There’s a lot of factors into it, in terms of where we are pick-wise,” Schoen said, via a transcript from the team. “We don’t have a fourth or a fifth right now. So, you take that into account. In some situations, that may rule some players out. Maybe that’s what their value is. Maybe a third is too rich or a sixth isn’t enough, so then you start looking into future picks and contract status, where we are depth-wise. . . . So, we’re going to look at all the options that are available. And there’s certain teams that have already started some trades and we’ve been in contact with those teams and have a pretty good idea of who may or may not be available. And again, it’s got to make sense, short-term and long-term, when you make those moves.”
The Colts got the ball rolling on trade season by dealing Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner on Tuesday. That will likely spark more conversations as teams try to avoid being without a chair when the music stops, but Schoen’s balancing act won’t be an easy one if it turns out to be a seller’s market around the league.
