The Portland Fire’s inaugural season is over after not making the WNBA Playoffs, but they showed flashes this season led by the young talent on the roster. 2025 draft pick Iyanna Martin is expected to join the team in 2027, and form a daunting backcourt alongside Carla Leite. But the Fire were hit with unexpected news this week when rookie guard Jordan Harrison announced her abrupt retirement after a strong WNBA debut.

Following a social media post explaining her decision to step away from basketball, the Fire posted their own tribute essentially confirming that Jordan Harrison was heading into retirement. Harrison did not use those exact words, only that she was stepping away from the game. The Fire’s post, however, did mention retirement.

After going undrafted in the 2026 WNBA Draft, Harrison joined the Fire for training camp. She was eventually cut, but rejoined the team via one of the league’s new development contracts. She then had that converted to a standard deal before the year’s end.

The former West Virginia standout appeared in 16 games as a rookie with the Fire, including two starts, at a little over 14 minutes per game. She averaged 5.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists with splits of 42.2 percent shooting from the field, 26.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 75 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The Fire are coming off their inaugural season in the league in which they finished 17-27 and in ninth place in the WNBA standings. In addition to the players they already have, the Fire will get a chance to add another lottery pick in the 2027 WNBA Draft.
