Alex Bohm rose as a new City of Brotherly Love hero Wednesday. His 10th inning home run helped prevent the Philadelphia Phillies from ending their season. Yet Bohm felt surprised after leading the 4-3 MLB Playoffs win over the Atlanta Braves.
Bohm explained his shock postgame alongside fellow teammate Bryce Harper.
“I don't really know what happened,” a smiling Bohm said. “I was trying to pull the ball off the foul pole and I hit it to right field. So I'll take it.”
But Bohm became more impressed with the grit of the Phillies while their backs were against the wall. Especially when Harper and Kyle Schwarber took to the plate.
“Obviously, we're not going to quit. They punched us and took the lead, but there are no better two guys who can punch back than him and Kyle. That was pretty electric and a great way to answer,” Bohm said. “That's the reason we won the game.”
So Bohm is deflecting the praise for his go-ahead home run. Even though that blast, which sailed 357 feet, lifted Philadelphia ahead for good. He wanted to hand his roses to the more decorated members of the Phillies who have been instrumental in leading this team.
This win also becomes a big one for manager Don Mattingly. Not only does the skipper get to see another MLB game, but he could face his former team the Los Angeles Dodgers in the next round. But only if the Phillies knock off Atlanta one more time on Thursday inside Truist Park.
