The college football season is nearly halfway over, with Alabama and Georgia slated to face off in one of the biggest matchups of the season so far on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, discourse about the sport's playoff format, and whether or not even more teams should be let into the big dance has continued ever since the field was initially expanded to 12 teams.

Now, the CFP has issued another statement on the matter, asserting that “we continue to have ongoing discussions with ESPN regarding media rights connected to potential Playoff expansion to 24 teams.”

However, college football insider Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports clarified on X, formerly Twitter, that the “College Football Playoff statement on update to potential expansion to 24 teams is there is no update.”

Some fans believe that the original field of four teams was just right in order to give teams a chance to battle it out for the right to hoist the trophy, as opposed to just the two top teams being voted into the national championship game, as was the case in the BCS system.

However, controversy quickly arose, and the field was then expanded to 12 teams, which allowed squads like the 2024 Ohio State Buckeyes to win a championship when they wouldn't have made the playoffs in previous seasons due to their record.

Still, even that expansion has some fans wanting more, with Notre Dame, Texas, and others feeling like they were cheated out of the playoff field last season, generating cause for 12 to be doubled to 24.

At this point, it doesn't seem that the CFP is any closer to making that hope a reality.
