Former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has expressed his support for current Crimson Tide starter Keelon Russell, praising the sophomore's development and performances ahead of Saturday's matchup against Georgia.
Young shared his assessment during ESPN's “College GameDay,” where he appeared as the program's celebrity guest picker. Discussing Russell's progress, the Carolina Panthers star identified him as an essential player for Alabama.
“I think the X-Factor is Keelon Russell,” said Young. “Watching him develop, watching how well he is playing, watching him have command, I am a huge fan. I think he is super special.”

Young spent two seasons as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback before the Panthers selected him No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2021 and led Alabama to a national championship in 2020.
Article Continues BelowRussell, a five-star recruit in the 2025 class, has started five games for the Crimson Tide this season and remains unbeaten in that role. He has completed 71% of his passes for 1,414 yards and 11 touchdowns, with two interceptions. He has also contributed four rushing touchdowns.
Former Alabama coach Nick Saban also drew attention to Russell's potential earlier this week, comparing him to Young during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
The praise comes before a thrilling SEC contest between No. 6 Crimson Tide and No. 2 Georgia. Both teams entered Saturday with 5-0 overall records and 3-0 marks in conference play. Alabama will host the Bulldogs at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
