The Denver Broncos enter Week 5 with an opening in their receiving rotation, but fantasy managers should resist treating Pat Bryant’s absence as an automatic breakout signal for Courtland Sutton and Jaylen Waddle.

The Broncos placed Bryant on injured reserve Friday because of an ankle injury. Sutton and Waddle carry no game designation, leaving both available for Sunday’s clash vs. the Los Angeles Chargers.

Denver holds a 2-2 record into SoFi Stadium against the 0-4 Chargers. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET, or 1:05 p.m. PT.

For fantasy purposes, the distinction matters. Bryant’s absence creates opportunities, while Sutton’s and Waddle’s recent production determines how confidently managers should pursue them. In typical 12-team, full-PPR leagues, Waddle deserves the stronger starting consideration. Sutton remains a risky flex option.

Pat Bryant on injured reserve, out for Week 5

Bryant had nine catches for 133 yards and a touchdown on 12 targets through four games. Removing roughly three targets per game from the offense does not create enough volume to guarantee a major jump for two receivers.

The third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft must miss at least four games, making him an injured-reserve stash where league rules allow—not a viable flex or RB2 option for Sunday.

Courtland Sutton remains a risky fantasy start

Sutton’s name recognition exceeds his current fantasy production. Through four games, he has nine receptions for 86 yards without a touchdown. His latest outing produced one catch for four yards against the San Francisco 49ers.

His 22 targets show that the Broncos have continued looking his way. The problem is what happens afterward. Catching nine of those passes leaves considerable room for improvement, but fantasy managers cannot award points for opportunities that fail to become completions.

Bryant’s absence gives Sutton another chance to rebuild his connection with Bo Nix. It does not erase the inconsistency that has made him difficult to start.

The opposing injury report offers a legitimate reason for optimism. The Chargers ruled out safety Derwin James Jr. and cornerback Donte Jackson with hamstring injuries. Losing both defenders could make their coverage more vulnerable.

Still, managers should not confuse a favorable development with a guaranteed touchdown. Sutton has yet to reach 50 receiving yards in any game this season.

The Broncos also have an offensive change coming. Sean Payton confirmed he will resume calling plays against the Chargers. That creates another variable in Sutton’s outlook, although it cannot establish a reliable workload before the game happens.

Start Sutton only if your alternatives carry similar uncertainty. Managers with a healthier combination of recent production and dependable targets elsewhere should keep him on the bench.

Jaylen Waddle offers stronger fantasy upside

Waddle has provided more evidence that he can deliver useful fantasy production with his new team. He enters Sunday with 16 receptions for 185 yards and one touchdown, including five catches for 35 yards and a score last week.

His eight-catch, 138-yard performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars demonstrated his upside. However, outings of two receiving yards in Week 1 and 10 in Week 3 underline the volatility.

That profile makes Waddle a reasonable WR2 or flex in full-PPR formats, depending on roster strength. His reception potential gives him an advantage over Sutton, but managers should still expect an uneven range of outcomes.

Denver has other candidates for Bryant’s snaps. Troy Franklin and Marvin Mims Jr. remain options, and the Broncos promoted Lil’Jordan Humphrey to the active roster Friday. None should receive an automatic fantasy starting spot solely because Bryant cannot play.

The distinction between snaps and targets is especially important here. Replacing Bryant on the field does not necessarily mean becoming Nix’s next preferred receiver. Franklin and Mims warrant monitoring in deeper leagues while their roles develop.

Broncos Week 5 fantasy outlook

Game flow could also limit the passing volume available. If the Broncos establish control, they may have little reason to force extra throws simply because the Chargers have injuries.

Check Sunday’s inactive list before kickoff, but Bryant should already be out of every starting lineup. Favor Waddle, approach Sutton cautiously and make the Broncos earn any broader fantasy upgrade through their actual usage.
