Washington Commanders star quarterback Jayden Daniels remains uncertain for the team’s upcoming game as he continues working his way back from an elbow injury. Ahead of their game against the Indianapolis Colts, Washington ruled out two players, but Daniels was notably not included among those unavailable for Sunday’s game.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Sam Cosmi and Nick Cross will not make the trip to London with the Commanders because of their respective injuries and illnesses.
“Commanders G Sam Cosmi (Concussion/Throat) and S Nick Cross (Illness) are not traveling with the team tonight to London and have been ruled out for Sunday’s game vs. the Colts,” Schefter reported.
Daniels did travel with the team, although his presence on the trip does not necessarily mean he will be cleared to play against Indianapolis. His status remains dependent on how he responds during the upcoming practices and evaluations.
Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that Daniels is expected to participate in a limited capacity while the team is in England.
“Yeah, just like a return to play process that we set forth of where it's at, different than just running and throwing, kind of the whole process for it. But he'll definitely be participating in some fashion as we go. But we'll take it through tomorrow, and Wednesday will be a lighter practice for us. So, we'll really ramp up our work as we get there on Thursday,” Quinn said.
Daniels suffered a dislocation of his non-throwing left elbow on the final play of the first half during Washington’s Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
When Daniels previously dislocated the same elbow last season, he missed four weeks of action. However, following the latest injury, general manager Adam Peters confirmed that the Commanders would not place their starting quarterback on injured reserve.
Due to the injury, Daniels sat out during their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Veteran backup quarterback Marcus Mariota stepped in for Daniels during Week 3 and guided Washington to a dramatic 33-31 win over Seattle.
Until Daniels receives full clearance for contact, Mariota is expected to remain the Commanders’ starter.
