The UFL’s status as a single company with eight offices sprinkled throughout the company gives the spring league plenty of flexibility when it comes to moving the pieces on the chessboard.
Most recently, the relocation of two franchises from Birmingham and Houston to Rhode Island and Colorado, respectively, has prompted the shuffling of three head coaches.
Last year, local Alabama legend A.J. McCarron became the head coach of the Birmingham Stallions. He’ll now be moving to Pawtucket. Which sounds more like the premise of a bad sitcom. He’ll be joined by the Birmingham roster.
Rick Neuheisel, who had coached the Dallas Renegades (a team that will continue to exist), transfers to the Colorado branch. Which brings the former Buffaloes head coach back to the area where his coaching career first flourished.
So what about the Renegades? Former Houston Gamblers coach Kevin Sumlin will take over the team in Dallas.
And here’s the last big twist. The Renegades roster will move to Colorado with Neuheisel. Which means that, even though the Houston franchise was dumped for a team in Colorado, the Renegades are the team making the Browns-Ravens transmogrification. And the Gamblers will become the new Renegades.
So, basically, Houston moved to Dallas and Dallas moved to Colorado and Birmingham moved to Rhode Island and that’s how it will be until the next time the UFL reshuffles the deck.
