The Tampa Bay Buccaneers probably didn't expect to start the season 0-3, and they also didn't expect to be without Baker Mayfield for the next few weeks because of a thumb injury. At this rate, there's a chance the Buccaneers' season is already lost, but there is still enough time to turn things around.
In the event that they don't, they could have a top draft pick next year, and Tim Crean of ClutchPoints has them picking Drew Mestemaker with the No. 7 pick.
“Drew Mestemaker struggled in his first game as a Power 5 signal-caller with a loss to Tulsa. However, he has since pulled off an upset over Oregon and a convincing win over West Virginia. If his transition from North Texas to Oklahoma State continues to go well, it’s safe to reason that his move from college to the pros will also be smooth,” Crean wrote.
Next year's class has a ton of good quarterbacks, and it would be the perfect time for the Buccaneers to try to find Mayfield's successor. Even though they just extended his contract, they still need to think about life after him, and it may be even possible for them to trade him at some point.
It all depends on what direction the franchise decides to go in, but anybody knows drafting a quarterback that early in the first round means that some changes are coming sooner rather than later.
If Mayfield can come back this season and play well, leading the Buccaneers to some wins, they probably won't consider drafting a quarterback. In the end, it might depend on where they're drafting in the first round and how much do they believe in Mayfield for the foreseeable future.
