Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi’s IL trip comes with concerning injury detail

The Los Angeles Angels were expecting Yusei Kikuchi to fill a crucial role in their rotation during the 2026 season. But now, the left-hander finds himself on the shelf.

The Angels have placed Kikuchi on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation. However, there’s a chance he needs more time on IL, via Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

“Perry Minasian said that the Angels and Yusei Kikuchi are still collecting information to determine to severity of his injury,” Fletcher wrote. “For now, he’s just on the 15-day IL with inflammation.”

Once Los Angeles has more information, they’ll know how best to proceed forward. They’re going to be cautious with Kikuchi, as the last thing they want is a further setback. Still, until any new information is announced, the left-hander’s status remains murky at best.

Over the seven games he has appeared in during the 2026 season, Kikuchi has posted a 5.81 ERA and a 33/14 K/BB ratio. The Angels know he has much more to offer after the veteran was named an All-Star in 2025. That season, Kikuchi put up a 3.99 ERA and a 174/74 K/BB ratio.

The Angels have been desperately searching for pitching as they try to work their way back towards contention. Kikuchi was a big piece of that puzzle. But with his shoulder injury now a mystery, Los Angeles will be forced to look elsewhere.

After more tests are done the Angels remain hopeful that Kikuchi isn’t suffering a serious long-term injury. But for now, all possible outcomes are on the table.
