Angels’ Chris Taylor decides not to retire, lands on IL
Cue the Wolf of Wall Street “I’m not f*****g leaving” GIF and delete those farewell posts, because Chris Taylor has changed his mind. The veteran utility man most known for his 10-year run with the Los Angeles Dodgers will remain in baseball for now and has been placed on the Los Angeles Angels’ minor league injured list with a left forearm fracture, per MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger.
It was reported on Friday that Taylor was retiring, but like jazz great Dinah Washington sang almost 70 years ago, “What a difference a day makes.” While it is unclear how long the 35-year-old will be sidelined, apparently he still has unfinished business left in this game.
Taylor has endured multiple roadblocks during his time in the Angels organization. He opted out of his contract after failing to make the Opening Day roster but ultimately signed a new deal with the squad at the end of March. The two-time World Series champion and 2021 All-Star has now flip-flopped on his retirement decision, so perhaps he just cannot quit the Halos.
Taylor has been with a California-based franchise since 2016, and if there is no room for him on the Dodgers or another in-state club, then maybe he is perfectly fine wrapping things up in Anaheim. He has to get back there first, however.
The 2017 Co-National League Championship Series MVP batted a measly .179 with the Angels last season, but he does have a knack for the big moment. If Chris Taylor can demonstrate competency in the batter’s box with the last-place ballclub, then it is possible that playoff contenders will try to scoop him up in the summer.
This clutch postseason performer is not done yet. He will heal up and attempt to hold off Father Time for a bit longer.
