Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper highlight Mercury’s injury report vs Fire
In the middle of the Phoenix Mercury’s three-game road trip, they have some unfortunate news regarding Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper’s injury status vs the Portland Fire on Friday.
Thomas is questionable with a left calf injury, while Copper is doubtful due to a left hip injury. This comes at a crucial time, as the Mercury are in a rough patch with a 3-8 record.
Losing the team’s top two players isn’t easy, considering they will be facing a scorching Fire team, whose head coach, Alex Sarama, won the WNBA Coach of the Month award for May.
Phoenix has struggled in nearly every facet this season. Nonetheless, this could be the first time that either player misses a game in the 2026 season.
After Copper missed the beginning of 2025 due to an injury, the bug might be back and have a more potent bite. As for Thomas, she’s dealt with calf injuries during her time in Phoenix that forced her to miss five games.
However, they had Satou Sabally to fill the void left by both players. This season, they don’t have that luxury. Nonetheless, there is a more than competent roster to put on the floor against Portland if both players are to remain out.
Standout rookie Jovana Nogić has been lights out from deep. Natasha Mack has arguably been the most consistent player on the roster. Not to mention, Monique Akoa Makani’s defensive prowess at the point of attack has been essential.
Head coach Nate Tibbetts will need to be creative if both starters are out. Even if one is out, he’ll need to reach deep in his bag to extinguish the Fire on Friday.
